Mattie Louise Hall-Herbert (affectionately known as “Marie”) was born on May 25, 1929, in Springfield, IL to Rev. Thomas Hall Sr. and Leola Hughes Hall. She departed this life Friday, November 19, 2021, at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery, AL where she resided the last 16 years, after moving from Harford, Connecticut in 2005.
Mattie declared her faith and hope in the Lord at an early age and raised her children also in the way of the Lord. Mattie attended Georgiana Training School and shortly married her 1st husband Willie E. Foster in 1945 and then married James Herbert in 1955. After several dedicated years Mattie retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, CT. Mattie continued to volunteer her time and service as a senior usher at Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, Hartford and the President of the United Women’s Social Club, also of Hartford. In 2005, Mattie relocated back to Alabama where she spent her youth and joined the Hall Street Baptist Church in Montgomery under the shepardship of Rev. Leonard Cammack. Mattie was loved by all that she came in contact with; leaving an imprint on their hearts and smiles on their faces.
Mattie was preceded in death by her mother and father, Leola Hughes Hall and Rev. Thomas Hall Sr.; one sister, Jean Hall; four brothers, Rev. Thomas Hall Jr., Charles Hall, James Hughes, and Willian Grant Hall; one son, Wendell Pinckney; one great-grandson, Julius “Langston” Thorpe; and a very special companion of 40 years, Louis Pinckney. Mattie leaves behind to mourn her passing: her children, Willie Foster of Ellington, CT.; Mildred (Claibourne) Austin of Durham, NC; Karl Herbert of Berlin, CT, and Sheri Bean of Durham, NC; Siblings, Lillie Ruth White, Mary Hall, Lettie Sanders, Laura Wise, and Frances Davis; 17 Grandchildren, 27 Great- Grandchildren, and 6 Great Great-Grandchildren; a host of loving nieces and nephews, cousins and friends; a special friend Mattie Walker; two adopted sons, Rev. Leonard Cammack and Russell Davis.
